Red, lilac and violet porphyry quarries, as well as volcanic tuff quarries, are located within “El Yuncón” Farm just a few meters away from the plant. The area comprises extraandine fields included within the morphological division known as “Sierra de los Patagonides”.
Its predominant orographic element is Cerro Yuncon (1052 m.) the name of which is of indigenous Quechua origin meaning “Burning Lands”. The region is a wide mountain mass, featuring hills in the middle, rises of eruptive origin, or arising from large mountain valleys, going down towards Limay River.
It is dark grey olivine basalt with plenty of basic plagioclase and pyroxene; it further has olivita which, in most cases, has been transformed to iddingsita, glass and iron oxide. |
